NEC Corporation announced an investment in Tascent, Inc., a U.S. -based biometric systems company, to accelerate the global expansion of its security business.

The demand for further security enhancement through multimodal biometrics is growing rapidly recently. Against this background, the iris recognition market is expected to grow significantly. NEC has developed biometrics for more than 40 years, and systems

using NEC Bio-Idiom biometrics have been implemented by more than 700 systems in 70 countries and regions worldwide. Earlier this year, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) rated NEC as the world's most accurate iris recognition

technology, and the NIST recently ranked NEC as the most accurate facial and fingerprint recognition technology in both areas.

Founded in 2015, Tascent provides multimodal biometric systems, especially iris modes. The company's technology includes optical control technology that allows high-speed remote capture of accurate, high-quality iris images, and user interface (UI) technology that smoothly guides users to capture accurate biometric information, embedding the security of Tascent technology.

The system is widely used by global airports, government agencies and enterprises.

The investment and collaboration will enable the two companies to leverage Tascent's optical control and UI technology, as well as NEC's advanced biometric engine, to enhance iris recognition capabilities and create the next generation of iris certification

products for the public safety market.

Masakazu Yamashina, executive vice president of NEC Corporation, said: "In NEC's Medium-Term Management 2020 Plan, the company positioned its security business as a global growth engine and focused on the development of this business. Looking ahead, NEC is committed to expanding its community solutions business and acquiring new customers through cooperation and mergers and acquisitions. Delivery of resources, core technologies and business models, and development of their own core technologies and solutions to further enhance profitability. "

Tascent, Inc. founder and co-CEO Alastair Partington, said: "Tascent is delighted to work with NEC to develop world-class identity solutions and accelerate the use of multimodal biometric technologies in government and commercial applications. The unique combination of NEC and Tascent technologies has the potential to meet the challenges of our identity today. Efforts to make life easier and safer for people all over the world. "
